"The Social Construction of the Self," Alghero, Italy, September 28-29, 2009.
What are the connections between social cognition and individual selfhood? How do social relationships contribute to shape our inner self? Conversely, how much of our mental like is intrinsically "social", and in what sense? Is there a sharp boundary between self and other, or these categories require a more nuanced analysis? If there is an intimate connection between society and selfhood, what is the role of language in this respect? These are some of the issues to be addressed in this interdisciplinary conference, where leading scholars in philosophy, psychology, and neuroscience are gathered to discuss the extent by which our inner mental life is influenced by the social context we live in.
